Definition

What is enterprise architecture consulting?

Enterprise architecture consulting gives an organisation an independent, senior view of how its systems, data, integrations and technology investments fit together, and a credible plan for where they should go next. A good enterprise architecture consultant maps what you run today, designs the target state, sets the governance that keeps decisions honest, and hands leadership a roadmap the board can fund with confidence.

Intelance delivers this TOGAF certified and vendor neutral, at fixed published fees, from a ten day baseline to a fully run virtual EA department. We sell no software, implement for no vendor and take no commission.

If you want the wider background first, our guide What is enterprise architecture in 2026? explains the discipline itself. This page covers how we deliver it as a service.

In practice, that means
01

Map the estate

What you run today: systems, data, integrations, contracts and cost.

02

Design the target

Where it should go next, and what to keep, replace, retire or consolidate.

03

Set the governance

Decision rights and standards that keep delivery aligned once money is moving.

04

Fund the roadmap

A sequenced plan with costs and risks, written for the people who approve it.

How we work

How we deliver enterprise architecture

The same model that runs across every Intelance practice: we assess, we build, and we operate, with independent assurance across all three. Each stage maps to specific EA services.

01
Establish the baseline

Assess

Start with an independent picture of what you run, what it costs, where the risk sits and what to do about it.

Services in this stage
02
Put it in place

Build

Design the target architecture and the governance that makes it stick, from operating model to platforms and tooling.

03
Keep it running

Operate

Senior architects own the function month by month, inside programmes and across the estate.

Independent assurance runs across all three

Architecture reviews, board reporting and programme assurance are delivered independently. If we built it, we do not assure it: independence is structural.

FAQs

Questions about enterprise architecture consulting

What does enterprise architecture consulting cost in the UK?

UK enterprise architecture day rates typically run £1,200 to £2,500 per day. Intelance works on fixed published fees instead: an EA QuickScan starts at £18,000 + VAT, ProjectEA support for live programmes starts at £45,000 + VAT, and a Virtual EA Department runs from £6,500 a month. The fee is agreed in writing before work starts.

How long does an EA engagement take?

An EA QuickScan delivers a baseline, risk view and funded roadmap in weeks rather than months. Programme support and operating model work run to a defined schedule agreed in the proposal, and a Virtual EA Department is a monthly arrangement you can scale or stop.

Should we hire a Head of Enterprise Architecture instead?

Sometimes, and we will say so when it is true. A permanent senior hire makes sense when there is a full time book of architecture decisions to own. When the need is a baseline, a programme, or part time senior cover, a fixed fee engagement or a Virtual EA Department delivers the outcome without the twelve month search and the permanent overhead.

Are you tied to any vendor or systems integrator?

No. Intelance sells no software, implements for no vendor and takes no commission. That independence is structural: it is why our tool selection service exists, and why our recommendations serve only your interest.

What is TOGAF and does it matter?

TOGAF is the most widely used enterprise architecture framework, maintained by The Open Group. Intelance is a TOGAF licensed organisation with TOGAF 9 and 10 certified architects, which means the method behind our work is recognised, teachable and verifiable. We apply it pragmatically: the framework serves the decision, never the other way round.

Who does the work?

Engagements are led by a senior partner and delivered by Intelance architects and consultants, with established associates and delivery partners brought in where scale or specialist depth is needed. Nothing is offshored and nothing is handed to a junior bench.

We already have architects. Why bring in a consultancy?

Three common reasons: an independent baseline before major investment, senior capacity your team does not have spare, and an outside voice when internal architecture advice keeps losing to programme pressure. We work alongside in house teams and hand everything over when we leave.

What do we receive?

Documents you own and can act on: a systems baseline, a target architecture, a sequenced roadmap with costs and risks, decision papers for the board, and governance that keeps working after we leave. Every deliverable is listed in the proposal before you commit.

How do we start?

Book a thirty minute discovery call with a senior architect. You will get a straight view of the right first step and a fixed fee proposal in writing if work makes sense. If the right answer is that you do not need us, we say that too.
